So in follow up to the other night's excitement...
Being the duitiful father and husband, and protector of the family I did a thurough inspection of all the heaters and their wiring... At this point I don't think I'll be sleeping much from what I've found.
The thing about wiring and heat is that wires don't like it. Electric baseboard heaters come in many varieties but all share the same designs for the most part. Where the wire goes into the heating element there is a point where the wire will eventually overheat, or become heated from the outside to the point that the insulation will harden, and crack and generally fail...
I could write a list of the wiring I saw that had failed insulation and was on the edge of failure. This is above and beyond the unit that the wire had simply melted off the end of the heating element (in the heater that alerted us to this whole problem.)
I was surprised at how calm and cooperative the real estate agent who acts as the maint company for our landlord took it. Her comment was here's the electricians number, call him in and have look over and fix or replace fix everything that is wrong and send me the bill. She might just regret all that when she see's the bill and how many units or on the edge of failure.
He's scheduled to come in tomorrow morning, but until then I am quite wary about turning on the heat in certain rooms based upon what I have seen.
I don't expect to get much sleep tonight...
On another note it's the edge of a new year. And in reading what is going on with others I care about I find myself both anxious and trepadous about it's arrival. Will it bring more of the same, or changes for the better, or goddess forbid the worse. It's the eve of 2012 the years that so many think is going to be the end of all. What will that entail, for something that is beleived about strongly enough takes on a life of it's own and no matter haw false or imaginary it began can become real and true.
Or perhaps I just worry too much....
